Cornish pasties
An economical recipe whether for hot or cold in a packed lunch, picnic or a simple meal on the run.
What you need
- 225 g lean stewing steak, trimmed and cut into small cubes
- 100 g potatoes, peeled and diced
- 100 g mushrooms, wiped
- 1 onion, peeled and chopped
- 1 tsp dried mixed herbs
- seasoning
- 450 g ready made shortcrust pastry
- 25 g butter
- 1 egg, beaten
Method
Preheat oven to 220°C.
In a bowl, mix together the steak, potatoes, mushrooms, onion, herbs and seasoning.
Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface. Using a 20 cm plate as a guide, cut into rounds.
Divide the filling between each round. Top each with a little butter. Dampen the edges of the pastry with a little water. Fold over, seal and crimp the edges.
Place the pasties on a baking tray. Brush with beaten egg. Bake in the oven for 15 min.
Reduce heat to 170°C. Cook for 1 hour. Leave to cool slightly before transferring to a cooling rack.
Serving suggestion
Mixed salad.
