Cornish pasties

An economical recipe whether for hot or cold in a packed lunch, picnic or a simple meal on the run.

What you need

225 g lean stewing steak, trimmed and cut into small cubes
100 g potatoes, peeled and diced
100 g mushrooms, wiped
1 onion, peeled and chopped
1 tsp dried mixed herbs
seasoning
450 g ready made shortcrust pastry
25 g butter
1 egg, beaten

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 220°C.

  2. In a bowl, mix together the steak, potatoes, mushrooms, onion, herbs and seasoning.

  3. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface. Using a 20 cm plate as a guide, cut into rounds.

  4. Divide the filling between each round. Top each with a little butter. Dampen the edges of the pastry with a little water. Fold over, seal and crimp the edges.

  5. Place the pasties on a baking tray. Brush with beaten egg. Bake in the oven for 15 min.

  6. Reduce heat to 170°C. Cook for 1 hour. Leave to cool slightly before transferring to a cooling rack.
